Weekly Gaming Roundup: Netflix Expands into Gaming, John Romero Documentary in the Works

This week in gaming, Netflix announced its expansion into the gaming world with four new interactive fiction mobile games based on its popular reality TV franchises. Meanwhile, a documentary and drama series about the life of John Romero, the godfather of first-person shooter games, are in the works.

Netflix Enters the Gaming Scene

Netflix is tapping into its plethora of popular unscripted series to expand its burgeoning video games business. The streamer will announce four new interactive fiction mobile games rolling out this year based on its top reality TV franchises: “Netflix Stories: Perfect Match,” “Too Hot to Handle 3,” “The Ultimatum: Choices,” and “Netflix Stories: Selling Sunset.”

These titles will join the nearly 100 video games currently available to subscribers at Netflix, which continues its expansion into gaming, a journey it first set out on in 2021. The games will include in-universe versions of Nick Lachey (host of “Perfect Match”) and Chloe Veitch (host of “The Ultimatum: Choices” and a workshop guru in “Too Hot to Handle 3”).

John Romero Documentary and Drama Series in the Works

The life story of video gaming’s original rock star, John Romero, is coming to the screen. Romero’s autobiography, “Doom Guy: Life in First Person,” was published last year to critical acclaim. It will be the basis for a documentary from Rob McCallum, the Canadian filmmaker who recently won the TIFF People’s Choice Award for Amazon doc “Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe.” A drama adaptation of Romero’s book is also being developed. Naomi Harvey will exec produce both projects under the Golden Possum Productions banner.
