Red Bull’s Soapbox Race Returns to London’s Alexandra Palace
Thousands of spectators gathered at London’s Alexandra Palace to witness the return of Red Bull’s Soapbox Race, a thrilling event that challenges teams to design and build the wackiest homemade soapboxes. This year’s competition saw 59 teams take part, with designs inspired by popular culture, including Harry Potter, The Simpsons, and Taylor Swift.
The Hurry Houdinis, from London, took home the top prize
The Hurry Houdinis, a team from London, were crowned the winners of this year’s competition. They credited their “lifetime of preparation” for their victory, which felt “electric” to achieve. Their soapbox design was inspired by the Harry Potter Knight Bus, and it was clear that their hard work paid off.
Creativity and Speed
The soapbox designs were judged on creativity, speed, and showmanship. While some teams didn’t make it to the finish line, others impressed the judges with their innovative designs. The Every Can Counts team, who designed a “recycling truck” soapbox called “Chitty Chitty Can Can,” took home third place. They joked that their soapbox reached speeds of “just under 1,000 miles an hour,” creating a “sonic boom” on the course.
