The Evolution of Gaming: From Doom to Netflix

The world of gaming has come a long way since the pioneering days of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. John Romero, the renowned video game designer, has had a profound impact on the industry, and his story is now being adapted for the silver screen. But that’s not all - Netflix is also expanding its gaming business, with four new interactive fiction mobile games based on its popular reality TV franchises.

The godfather of first-person shooter

Romero’s autobiography, Doom Guy: Life in First Person, is an inspiring tale of triumph over trauma, filled with compassion and inspiration. The book chronicles his difficult childhood and storied career, from submitting Apple II game code to computer magazines to sneaking computers out the back door of his day job to write code at night.

Two projects are in the works based on Romero’s autobiography - a documentary created by award-winning Canadian filmmaker Rob McCallum, and a scripted drama series about the life and storied career of video gaming’s original rock star.

“John’s story is incredibly powerful - not just the part about the revolutionary games he created, but his profound impact on those around him.” - Naomi Harvey, executive producer

“Romero’s journey is the missing antidote for all of us misfit toys looking for hope and kindred spirits in the darkness of the world.” - Rob McCallum

Meanwhile, Netflix is tapping its plethora of popular unscripted series to expand its burgeoning video games business. Four new interactive fiction mobile games are rolling out this year, based on its top reality TV franchises: Netflix Stories: Perfect Match, Too Hot to Handle 3, The Ultimatum: Choices, and Netflix Stories: Selling Sunset.
