The Blurred Lines of Fame: Troye Sivan on Being in the Spotlight

As a 29-year-old pop sensation, Troye Sivan has become no stranger to the spotlight. However, despite his rising fame, the singer-songwriter has confessed that he’s not as comfortable in the center of attention as one might expect. In a recent interview with GQ, Troye revealed that his outgoing personality on stage is a far cry from his everyday life.

“It’s weird maybe because of my job, but I actually don’t really like being the centre of attention outside of my work,” Troye admitted. He attributed this to possibly being an Australian trait, stating that he just wants to blend in with the crowd.

This contrasting persona is something that Troye has learned to navigate. On stage, he transforms into a confident performer, but in his everyday life, he’s content with just being himself.

“When I’m onstage, it’s the complete opposite - and I feel totally comfortable because it feels warranted in that moment,” he explained. “But in my everyday life, I would much, much, much rather [not be]. There’s no fuss ever.”

This duality in Troye’s personality has led him to appreciate the importance of being present in the moment. As he prepares to co-headline the Sweat Tour alongside Charli XCX, Troye is relishing the opportunity to take it all in.

“I’m just going to try and be present and take it all in because I think it’s going to be a really special tour,” he said, expressing his admiration for Charli as “one of [his] favourite people” in the music industry.

Troye’s rise to fame has been a whirlwind experience, and he’s still adjusting to the attention that comes with it. In an interview with Vogue Australia, he confessed that he often finds himself pinching himself to see if it’s all real.

“I definitely pinch myself… I pinch myself very, very often,” he said, acknowledging the surreal nature of his fame.

However, with fame comes great responsibility, and Troye has learned to navigate the challenges that come with it. He shared an anecdote about a time when he had to apologize for throwing away flowers given to him by a fan, explaining that it was a mistake and he’s still learning to handle these situations.

“I had my first little scandal. I had been given some flowers by a fan and I was flying out that day and I didn’t know what to do with them and I threw them in the bin,” he recalled. “[But] I think if you know yourself and are ready to apologize for dumb mistakes then it’s fine, you do your best.”
