The Iconic Yakuza Franchise Gets a Fresh Take on Prime Video

Ryoma Takeuchi, the actor behind Kiryu in Prime Video’s Like A Dragon: Yakuza adaptation, shares his experience bringing the beloved video game series to life on the small screen. From its humble beginnings in 2005, the Yakuza franchise has captivated audiences with its gritty portrayal of Japanese crime organizations, specifically the Tojo Clan in the fictional district of Kamurocho.

I was surprised to be offered this role. I knew about the game series and had played the first game at my uncle’s home. It’s a real challenge to play a character from an existing work, and I considered very carefully whether I was suited to portray Kiryu, and whether it was right for me. From the beginning, I knew I would have to give it everything I have, or I’d never pull it off.

Takeuchi’s dedication to his craft is evident in his portrayal of Kiryu, a complex character who embodies both the typical tropes of a hero and the darker aspects of the criminal underworld. This delicate balance is what makes Kiryu so admirable and relatable.

Balancing Tone and Drama

Prime Video’s Yakuza series must walk a tightrope between capturing the franchise’s signature tone and staying true to its dramatic roots. The show’s creators face the daunting task of translating the game’s wacky hijinks and intense drama into a cohesive narrative that will resonate with both old and new fans.

The Yakuza series has always been known for its memorable characters, intricate storylines, and, of course, its over-the-top action sequences. As the show navigates the complexities of Kiryu’s journey, it’s clear that the stakes are high – not just for the characters, but for the entire franchise.

A New Chapter for Yakuza

With Prime Video’s adaptation, the Yakuza franchise enters a new era, one that promises to bring the beloved characters and storylines to a wider audience. As the show continues to unfold, fans old and new will be treated to a fresh take on a classic franchise.
