Golden Axe: The Iconic SEGA Franchise Gets a Fresh Spin as an Animated Comedy Series

The beloved SEGA franchise is coming to life in a whole new way.

In a move that’s sure to delight fans of the classic video game series, Comedy Central has announced a brand new animated comedy series based on Golden Axe. The show, which has received a 10-episode first-season order, is being produced by CBS Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film.

A Hilarious and Loving Homage

The new series will follow veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead, the original playable characters of the first game, as they once again battle to save the land of Yuria from the evil giant, Death Adder, who just can’t stay dead. This time, they’ll be joined by the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib, a first-time adventurer who has wanted to quest his entire life. Despite his lack of skills, he makes up for it with his positive, can-do attitude.

A Star-Studded Voice Cast

The show boasts an impressive voice cast, including Matthew Rhys, Danny Pudi, Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre, and Carl Tart. Rhys voices Thunderhead, a grumpy dwarf with poor hygiene and a chip on his shoulder. Gilroy voices Tyris Flare, a fearsome battle sorceress, who is deadlier in a fight and even deadlier with her sharp wit. McIntyre voices Ax Battler, a barbarian warrior with a strict code of honor and a “sweet golden retriever demeanor.” While he has more brawn than brains, his heart outweighs his brawn. Tart voices Chronos “Evil” Lait, a humanoid panther who is uncomfortably cheesy and can’t read the room.

Expect Lots of Fun Cameos

According to Comedy Central, fans can expect lots of fun cameos from the world of the games for the upcoming series. CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, the animation arm of CBS Studios, is producing the animation. Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler will co-write the first episode and executive produce the show, with Chandler serving as showrunner.
